This is a project that I.B.N. is working on with David Morneau, where we count down to the Apocalypse (as predicted by the Mayan Calendar) on 12/21/2012 by releasing a new eschaton-themed track on the 21st day of each month. Speak Onion is up first, so expect new a new Speak Onion track on 1/21/2012. More details to come about all that, so keep an eye on the B’ak’tun Waning page at Immigrant Breast Nest.

The podcast also includes a new and unreleased Speak Onion joint called “Salt In The Symbols.” This track is taken from a new Speak Onion E.P. to be released at the end of January, 2012. There will be four new Speak Onion bangers to shred your mind brains. And, we’ll be celebrating that new release with a live show at The Charleston in Brooklyn on 1/27/2012, so keep an eye on this site for more details about that.

Grindthieves is back and they’re talking about Battle At Silent Barn!

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

If you don’t know Grindthieves, then I feel bad for you. But it’s ok, because if you don’t know, now you know. And also, they know. They know a lot about what is good in film, art, and especially music. I was bummed when they went away for a while, but they’re back, and they’ve got a post up about the Digit216 vs. Speak Onion Battle At Silent Barn.

My favorite quote is this:

“Punishing, okay?”

That about sums it up. So go get yourself some of that good battle set (Download IBN017: Digit216 vs. Speak Onion- Battle At Silent Barn) and go look at all the other great stuff that Grindthieves has to tell you about. You’re welcome.

Pics and live set recording from Saturation party last night!

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

Last night was way beyond awesome. From The Gut are geniuses of space transformation and wild sounds and rad parties. The view from the rooftop party space was amazing as expected!

Cry of the Peacocks was really awesome holding down the squelch for like 90 minutes (made me feel like a bitch for only doing half an hour, ha!), and then I came on to do my thing. I had worked up a new and more abstract and not completely over-the-top set like I usually do for this event, and I think it went well.

And then this little guy showed up to check it out:

Anyway, thanks a million to From The Gut for inviting me to be a part of this transformed space event and thanks to everyone who came to see it!

If you missed it, you can check out the recording: Speak Onion at Eton Trading 6-18-10

FREE show at From The Gut’s Saturation on Friday, June 18

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

Yep. I’ll be playing an extra special and intimate (wink, wink) set on the rooftop of Eton Trading in Greenpoint on Friday, and it’s 100% FREE! It’s part of From The Gut’s Saturation NYC event, a night of transformed space, art, sculpture, and sound. There’s more info at the Saturation facebook event listing, and the details are below.

Friday, June 18, 2010; I’ll play at probaly 10PM or so.
Eton Trading
238 Franklin Street (at Freeman), Greenpoint, NY

This is going to be an extra awesome show. I’m fixing to play a bit of a different set than I usually do given the more artsy/experimental nature of the event. I’m going to focus on abstract weirdness rather than sheer fucking power. I mean, there will be plenty of bL00r, don’t worry about that, I’ve not gone totally soft, but there will probably be less beats kicking you in the face and more synthesizers melting down. Plus the whole outdoor rooftop thing is way cool. I’ve included a picture of the view from a roof in Greenpoint at night. This is purely a (p)re-enactment, I make no guarantees of scenic-ness.

OK, see you there!

Speak Onion interviewed on the Solipsistic Nation podcast

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

The brilliant Solipsistic Nation podcast has featured Speak Onion in their recent show about people who use iphones/ipads/ipods to make electronic music. I am a fan of this podcast, so it’s pretty awesome to be included in this.  The last 10 minutes or so of the show are devoted are an interview with me and my live set from last January, Speak Onion at Brecht Forum, January 19, 2009. Listen to Solipsistic Nation No. 193 right here.

I talk on the show about my love/not-so-much-love relationship with the app I use on the iphone, Intua’s Beatmaker. In my live setup, I use that app to run beats and loops and anything that comes from my recorded tracks, and then I mix those with synth noises from the Nord G2 and process them with the G2 and with pedals. Beatmaker has a lot of great features, but also some limitations that can drive me up a wall from time to time. I’m eagerly (EAGERLY) awaiting Version 2 of Beatmaker. I am hoping for a lot of new features and capabilities. I know they’ve implemented choke groups on it, and that alone will be really helpful to me. I have no idea when it will be available, though. . .

So go grab the new episode of Solipsistic Nation, and subscribe to their podcast while you’re there, because there’s plenty of new and awesome electronic music coming out of there every week. And stay tuned for future Speak Onion shows and new music. I’m hard at work in the laboratory over here. . .
