Speak Onion interviewed on the Solipsistic Nation podcast

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

The brilliant Solipsistic Nation podcast has featured Speak Onion in their recent show about people who use iphones/ipads/ipods to make electronic music. I am a fan of this podcast, so it’s pretty awesome to be included in this.  The last 10 minutes or so of the show are devoted are an interview with me and my live set from last January, Speak Onion at Brecht Forum, January 19, 2009. Listen to Solipsistic Nation No. 193 right here.

I talk on the show about my love/not-so-much-love relationship with the app I use on the iphone, Intua’s Beatmaker. In my live setup, I use that app to run beats and loops and anything that comes from my recorded tracks, and then I mix those with synth noises from the Nord G2 and process them with the G2 and with pedals. Beatmaker has a lot of great features, but also some limitations that can drive me up a wall from time to time. I’m eagerly (EAGERLY) awaiting Version 2 of Beatmaker. I am hoping for a lot of new features and capabilities. I know they’ve implemented choke groups on it, and that alone will be really helpful to me. I have no idea when it will be available, though. . .

So go grab the new episode of Solipsistic Nation, and subscribe to their podcast while you’re there, because there’s plenty of new and awesome electronic music coming out of there every week. And stay tuned for future Speak Onion shows and new music. I’m hard at work in the laboratory over here. . .

Metabolor reviewed by Heathen Harvest

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Heathen Harvest has just posted up a review of my 2009 release, Metabolor. Read it here.  Here’s a bit of it. . .

“. . .a raucous form of extreme soundwork that is equal parts hardcore techno, drum’n'bass and noise. This is the sound of the U.S. underground Breakcore scene, a quickly evolving genre, and Speak Onion is one of it’s masters.”

and. . .

“It is that aspect of ‘Metabolor’, the small touches that flux under and through the rhythms, that adds a complexity and makes the listening experience all the richer. The idea, of course, is that this is not really dancefloor music at all, but ‘mind-music’. . .”

Woo! If you’d like to check out Metabolor for yourself, download it from Immigrant Breast Nest. Onward and upward!

Shoving stuff into my box. . .

I don’t play out with a laptop.

Most people already know that. What I do play out with is a pile of different devices (pedals, synths, mixers, samplers, whatever else) all connected together. As a dude with a pile of stuff who is often playing with other acts who just have a laptop, I try to keep my setup as self-contained as possible. I want to be able– like a laptop artist– to just plug in power, plug in L/R audio, and rock. So, I have everything in a road case, all connected up, with just power leads coming out, and master L/R audio coming out. Check out the setup I was using in January of last year.

See how nice and compact that is? Iphone to run the samples (Beatmaker FTW), pedals to process samples or do feedback loops, and the DJ mixer to mix and route everything. Nice.

Eventually, I got interested in the Nord modular synth line, and decided that would be a fun thing to integrate. The idea of the Nord modular stuff is that it’s a complete virtual modular synth with oscillators, filters, shapers, mixers, FX, everything. You set up devices made from those modules by using a computer editor, but then you save them in the box, and you can use them without the computer. I got a Nord Micro Modular and added it to the mix. Check it out.

Ok, the Nord really flipped the script. I loved it so damn much! I wanted more Nord Modular power, so I upgraded to a Nord Modular G2 Engine. The G2 line adds some awesome new modules (including delay, which is nice), upgraded sound, and the Engine has room for 4 patches instead of just 1 on the Micro Modular. Wow. I got the bright idea to bulid a custom virtual mixer inside the G2 engine, to do what my DJ mixer had been doing. So I had basically the same setup, but much smaller, because instead of the mixer, I just needed the Engine, plus a MIDI controller to control it. Check out what I used for the show last month.

Tiny! Awesome, right?! Nah, not really. I made it work for that show, but ultimatley, I missed my mixer. The virtual mixer was a good idea on paper, but I didn’t feel like I had the same control. Also during my set, the MIDI controller lost power for a second (damn my eternal thrashing about) so the controls lost their sync with the actual values and it was a bit of a mess for a minute. Again, nothing tragic, but I had to have my mixer back.

Ok, fine, so back to the bigger setup, but with the Engine instead of the Micro, right? I wish. Unfortunatley, the DJ mixer and the Engine don’t fit together in the case that I have. They are exactly 3/4″ too big. And this is why I stress so hard that I need my seutp to be already connected in a box. I could use the Engine with the Mixer just slapped up on a table, but it would take FOREVER to get it up and running at the show. What I really need is a bigger box. And I’ll get one. But for now, what am I going to do? I’ve got a show coming up next weekend and I need to figure out a setup. Well, I’m going to do a throwback. No Nord stuff, just samples, pedals, and mixer. There’s no photo, because it looks almost exactly like the first setup.  I’m excited, and you should be, too. It’s going to rule.

But after that, once I have a bigger box, expect a whole new thing from me. But that’s another post. . .

Show coming up on 3/14 with Maruosa, David B. Applegate, Digit216!

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

I’m 100% extremely stoked to announce this show coming up next month with the mighty Maruosa from Japan, plus local friends, David B. Applegate and Digit216. It’s going to be a real banger, I assure you. See you there!

Xrin Arms/Speak Onion- Snow Braid available now!

Click the pic to get to the download!

So here it is. The much-delayed, repeatedly-changed, widely-anticipated(?) split release from Xrin Arms and myself. I’m glad we waited, becasue it really became something pretty amazing. If you think you know Xrin Arms, think again and download this record, because he flips the script here. The tracks are so completely blown out and weird. He’s tapped into some psychadelic vibes that are really pretty exciting. His half of the release really makes you feel high on drugs.

And then my track comes in like a terrible hangover. Deep Cover is a track I’ve actually been working on for a long time, and it took me a while to get it right. I think I’ve even been playing versions of it live since June of 09. But I finally recorded something that captures the wildness of the live versions, and here it is.

Lastly, I’m really glad I got to do a split with Xrin Arms. We’ve played a ton of shows together and toured together and he’s really always helped get the word out about Speak Onion and shown me the ropes a bit, and we’ve become like brothers over the couple of years that we’ve known each other. The man DJ’d my wedding, you dig? So finally we get down together on record, and it’s a thing of beauty.

Speak Onion featured in the Village Voice!

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Woohoo! Check it out: http://www.villagevoice.com/2010-02-09/music/speak-onion-s-wii-teenage-riot/

This article is out. I have to shout out Ray Cummings, who did a great job on the article, and who was a blast to chat with via telephone. You may remember Ray writing a blurb about me previously in his Friday Night Noise column. This article devotes more time to the background of SO, and also reviews the “Trigger Pusher” release. Overall, I’m really pumped, as this is pretty much the best press I’m likely to get. Unless there’s a magazine called Breakcore Illustrated out there somewhere that I just haven’t seen yet. . .  Anyway, I’m hoping this leads to some people checking out the record and coming out to shows. I have so much noise to give!

That leads me to my other big announcement today. . .

This past Saturday’s set videos!

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Saturday night at Coco66 was amazing. What an awesome show. Everyone really nailed it, and dang that Coco66 PA is no joke. Thanks to everyone who came out. My first show on the new set-up went really great. I was nervous without my familiar Numark DJ mixer and Echo Park delay, but the Nord G2 really killed it. My favorite quote form the night was when some girl came up to David B. Applegate during my set asking, “WTF is that stuff he’s playing it looks like he’s got nothing up there!!!” That’s right. Just an IKEA Gorm shelf packed with synth-y goodness.

Anyway, here’s videos. The first one is based on “Many Fewer Branches” from Metabolor, and the second one is from an as-yet unreleased remix. More about that soon. Don’t miss my awesome post-set dance moves in part 2. I hope the sound is halfway decent on these, but the PA was sooooo loud and soooo bassy, and my darling WIFE, while videotaping, was sitting on one of the sub-woofers, so the camera’s microphone really couldn’t hang. It sounded awesome in the room. Trust me.

Regen Magazine Loves Metabolor, and So Can You. . .

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Regen magazine recently posted a review of my record from April of last year, Metabolor (IBN002). Check out the review here. Regen says of Metabolor,

“For these brave few that seek out breakcore for their listening enjoyment, Speak Onion is the man for the job. Blending the intricacies of breakcore with the sheer power of noise, Metabolor is perfect for the breakcore fanatic,”

and

“Speak Onion brings forth gunfire drums and imminent doom with his music,”

and

“…but those well-versed in the genre [breakcore] will find Speak Onion a strong player in the field.”

among other fantastically positive things.

What can I say? It’s all true. Find out for yourself by downloading Metabolor from Immigrant Breast Nest. Click Here.

Also, don’t forget about the free show coming up on February 6 at Coco66! And don’t miss out on all the pithy shit I’m tweeting on twitter. And did you get Trigger Pusher yet? Oh, and I was interviewed for an article about Speak Onion in the Village Voice, which should be published on February 2, so look out for that. Ok, that’s basically everything, I think.

Speak Onion blowing up Brooklyn, Sat. 2/6/10!

2-6flyer

I’m returning to my favorite venue in NYC, Coco66, next month for my first show of 2010. And it’s 100% free so you might as well come accept the gift of loud music from me and everyone at Immigrant Breast Nest. I’m really excited about playing with some of NYC’s finest electronic music scientists, Joy Through Noise, Insect Deli, and Naetron. This will be a really epic night of music. I mean, you were going to be out drinking that night anyway, so you might as well do it at this FREE show. I’ll bring the beats, you bring the party.

Trigger Pusher released on I.B.N. today!

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

The time is here. Trigger Pusher is now available for you to download from Immigrant Breast Nest. This record grew out of the live performance style I developed throughout 2009 by playing all the shows I could. These 2 tracks are very long and, like my live sets, full of drastic shifts and changes, beats and loops working their way in and out of noise, and just non-stop intensity right from me to you. I’m as proud of this music as anything I’ve ever made, and it represents exactly what Speak Onion is about. This form of electronic music is the purest way I can think of to communicate what I think is good and exciting. There’s no needless DSP wankery, no long DJ-friendly intros and outros, no ironic samples, no  pretentious art-house rambling, no bullshit. Just as much awesome sound as I could come up with and shove into 2 tracks. I hope you like it. I can’t wait to drop these beats in my upcoming live sets.

Trigger Pusher is, as everything else I do, available as a free download. Click the cover to get it. The label’s promo text is after the cover.

triggerpusher3

Just in time to ruin New Year’s Eve parties from coast to coast, Speak Onion’s latest release, “Trigger Pusher,” aims to capture the style of his live sets, overflowing with energy and unpredictability.  These two very-long-form tracks roller-coaster into and out of of chaos; stomping, clawing and weirding out, unfurling into your ears and brain.  While it may have the soul of a fire-breathing basement party, “Trigger Pusher” has more than enough acrobatic beats, king-sized basslines, and warped hooks to make it a potential headphone favorite.  And it’s all done with Speak Onion’s patented intensity.  Warn your ear drums and go for it.
